An appendectomy is a surgical procedure in which the appendix is removed. When an appendix becomes infected, it is necessary to remove the organ entirely. The infection of the appendix is called appendicitis and, if not treated promptly, can cause abdominal sepsis, a life-threatening condition.
In a laparoscopic appendectomy, the procedure is much less invasive in contrast to a traditional, “open” appendectomy. When performed laparoscopically, the appendectomy is completed without having to make a large incision in the abdomen. Instead, a few tiny incisions are made near the bellybutton. A long thin tube with a miniature camera is guided to the site through one of those incisions. Tiny surgical instruments are used via this tube. The appendix is then removed through another of the small incisions.
A laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the most common surgical procedure for patients with symptom-causing gallstones and other conditions impacting the gallbladder. The goal of a cholecystectomy – or gallbladder removal operation – is to remove the diseased organ without damaging the liver or bile ducts.
A cholecystectomy can be performed in a traditional, “open” surgery or laparoscopically, which is much less invasive. A laparoscopic cholecystectomy involves making the smallest possible incisions, making it a much more favorable option in contrast to open abdominal surgery.
An endoscopy is a procedure that enables doctors to look inside the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) with an endoscope inserted through a patient’s throat. A colonoscopy is performed similarly, except that the colonoscope is inserted through a patient’s rectum. In both cases, the procedure can be used to diagnose and simultaneously treat digestive tract issues. This includes the surgical removal of polyps, treatment for abscesses, GI bleeding, and other issues.
